Mal and Inara met up in the kitchen a while back and had a very interesting conversation. As most things do with these two, it ended badly.

Walking outside by the waterline is someone who hasn't been seen in quite some time. Her bare feet skim over the sand and she twirls on occasion, humming some upbeat tune or another to herself.

*in walks a scruffy little man with a really awesome (although not cunning) hat. And a tie. Obviously the model of a completely legitimate businessman. He takes a step or two in and peers around, startled and suspicious, and a bit uneasy, almost as if he's missing a few members of a goon squad flanking him. There is a Max sitting in the bar of the hotel, nursing a glass of beer and looking lonely.
